Behrmann Meat & Processing is a family-owned business that was started by Dennis Behrmann and his father-in-law Vincent Tonnies in 1968 under the name Tonnies Meat Company. In the 1970’s Dennis and his wife Elaine purchased Vincent’s stock and changed the name to Behrmann Meat & Processing. Cliff Behrmann, son of Dennis and Elaine, purchased the business from his parents in 2020 making Behrmann Meat & Processing a third-generation family-owned and operated business. Over the years there have been several additions to the building, with the most recent being a completely renovated and remolded front retail area, route area along with a little facelift to the exterior of building in 2024. We have grown to over 80 full-time and several part-time employees. At Behrmann Meat & Processing we provide Custom Processing for Pork, Beef, Lamb, Venison, and other wild game. We also service wholesale customers spanning four states.
Currently we are processing over 250 hogs weekly, all locally raised, and approximately 25 beef. Our custom processing customers come from a radius of 75 miles, in some cases farther. Each year our venison processing increases, this year reaching 2,500 processed orders. We are often referred to as “The Biggest little Plant in Southern Illinois” and of course very proud of the comment.
Our specialties consist of Cured Bacon, Bone-In and Bone-Out Cured Hams, and our “squeel’n fresh” Pork Sausage and Bratwurst (which are available in a variety of flavors), not to mention our fresh Beef cuts. Our products are sold wholesale and retail. Our wholesale route consists of Eight delivery trucks making deliveries to various stores, restaurants, bars, and other meat processing facilities in a 175-200 mile radius.
